BIORIG will invest 250 million euros to build 10 biomethane production facilities in Castilla y León (Spain)

  • The collective output will generate clean energy equivalent to 20% of the annual gas consumption in Castilla y León households. The facilities, to be built in rural areas across the provinces of León, Zamora, Salamanca, Valladolid, Burgos, and Soria, are expected to be operational by late 2025. 
  • These infrastructures play a strategic role in fostering sustainable rural development, contributing to wealth creation and population retention by generating over 350 local job opportunities. The 10
    plants will recycle more than 1.5 million tons of agricultural and livestock
    waste, producing renewable gas that will prevent the annual emission of 300,000
    tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
  • Additionally, the facilities will produce organic fertilizers and incorporate state-of-the-art technology to capture biogenic CO2, achieving zero waste.

Madrid / Soria, 29th November 2023.- Biorig, the biomethane division of Solarig, has announced a 250 million euros investment for the development, construction, and operation of 10 biomethane production facilities in the Castilla y León region.

The collective plants will produce clean energy equivalent to 20% of the total annual gas consumption in the region. The new facilities will be located in rural areas of municipalities in the provinces of León, Zamora, Salamanca, Valladolid, Burgos, and Soria, creating a significant positive impact on the rural and sustainable development of the region. Furthermore, this project will create over 350 jobs and valorize more than 1.5 million tons of annual agro-livestock waste, preventing the emission of 300,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The facilities, whose development has already begun, are expected to be operational by late 2025. The development project for the first of these facilities was presented last October in San Millán de los Caballeros (León).

“Castilla y León holds the highest biomethane generation potential in Spain. These facilities, in addition to being new sources of green energy production, are essential infrastructure for the proper long-term management and valorization of waste in the region. Fifteen years ago, we invested and built the largest solar power plant in Castilla y León, in the municipalities of Frechilla de Almazán and Coscurita (Soria), an infrastructure that continues to produce renewable energy steadily. Today, we announce the development of 10 plants that constitute our commitment to biomethane in this autonomous community”, quoted Miguel Ángel Calleja, President of Solarig.

Manuel Alonso, General Manager of Biorig.

Zero Waste Technology 

The 10 facilities will feature state-of-the-art technology to ensure zero waste: from the capture of biogenic CO2 to the utilization of rainwater, enabling zero water consumption and ensuring zero discharge. Similarly, the by-products or digestates (the residues left after the process of obtaining energy) will be treated to become organic fertilizers. This approach will reduce the dependence on chemical fertilizers and contribute to a more sustainable fertilization of the agricultural soils in the region.
